Dr. Nadya Fouad, Distinguished Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, discusses globalization and diversity. She argues that globalism has really opened the door to focus on differences in cultural values. Multi-national companies are now looking at how cultural values determine management styles, communication needs, decision-making, etc. Companies that are inclusive and value diversity understand that different perspectives coming from many different people are ways to strengthen their bottom line.

How is global talent mobility helping  to address or compound the talent shortage? If work is created, will talent move to that work? This is a complex issue according to Rebekah Kowalski, VP and Principal Consultant for Strategic Workforce Consulting at Right Management, a ManpowerGroup Company. There is a worldwide shortage of rightly skilled talent and a mismatch between what’s needed and what is actually being supplied. According to Kowalski, the solution is a long-term, multi-stakeholder investment in developing the workforce.

Are young adults prepared for the 21st-Century workplace? http://studyofwork.com/2014/01/are-young-adults-prepared-for-the-21st-century-workplace/ http://studyofwork.com/2014/01/are-young-adults-prepared-for-the-21st-century-workplace/#comments Thu, 30 Jan 2014 15:35:12 +0000 http://studyofwork.com/?p=6613 A surprising new study by Bentley University, examines why the national rate of unemployment for college graduates stands at nearly eight percent. There is widespread disagreement between business leaders and Millennials over the root causes of this problem, beyond the obvious problem of a sluggish economic recovery. According to the survey, nearly three-quarters of hiring managers complain that Millennials — even those with college degrees — aren’t prepared for the job market and lack an adequate “work ethic.” Nearly two thirds of those surveyed consider this lack of preparedness a “real problem,” while 62 percent of business decision makers and recruiters say that unpreparedness harms the day-to-day productivity of their businesses. Not surprisingly, more than half of the Millennials surveyed disagreed.
