Goals form a major part of George Karl’s coaching strategy, and they can also help organizations navigate the future. But overly ambitious goals can discourage action rather than motivate it, so Karl breaks strategic goals into more manageable and more tangible elements. As a NBA coach, he breaks the season into 20-game segments, and after every twenty games each player sets statistical goals. The hope is that each player’s short-term objectives will coalesce into a championship victory.

Leadership may encompass a variety of skills and personality traits, but according to George Karl, a leader must put the best in front of the best. Even that may not be enough, though. Egos, lack of communication, and dishonesty can undermine even the most talented group of people. A strong team keeps the lines of communication open and expects honesty from team members.
